Kansas City Traffic Fatalities Increase: What to Do When a Loved One Dies in a Traffic Accident

NPR reported recently that traffic fatalities in Kansas City increased in 2023. The article states, “In 2023, 102 people died in traffic crashes, according to the Kansas City Police Department. That’s an increase from 2022, when 89 people died in crashes….” As a personal injury lawyer in Kansas City for almost 20 years, I have handled many traffic fatality cases. These are devastating cases because they involve the ultimate loss: the death of a loved one. If you’ve lost a loved one in traffic crash, here are a few things to do to ensure you get full compensation under the law.

Preserve Records

The death of a loved one from a traffic crash is a terrible event. It will cause a lifetime of loss. The initial shock from learning about a loved one’s death will, understandably, distract you from thoughts of a lawsuit or claim for compensation. However, it is vital that records, pictures, videos, and any other documents be preserved so they can be used to help win your case. If handling document preservation is too much after a traffic fatality, ask someone to help.

Preserve or Inspect Vehicles

It may also be difficult to ensure the vehicle your loved one was in when she or he died is preserved. However, this too is of the utmost importance. A vehicle inspection may show other causes of a crash, like bad tires or faulty equipment. This could give rise to additional claims and result in more money compensation. If you cannot get the vehicle inspected right away, you should at least make sure it is preserved until an inspection can happen.

These are but a few things that will help ensure you have a case if you’ve lost a loved one in a traffic crash. If this has happened to you, please consider contacting our firm. We have the experience and expertise to get you maximum compensation for your loss.
