The 5 Things to Remember When You Are Injured on Someone Else's Property

These basic steps can help you develop a sound slip or trip and fall claim. Keep these things in mind and your chances of a making a recovery for your injuries and losses will increase.

1. If you are hurt and seek medical attention, make sure you tell your doctor or other medical provider how exactly you got hurt

What is stated in the medical records about your injury or accident often carries the most weight in personal injury or wrongful death lawsuits. You therefore need to be sure to recount accurately to your doctor how an accident occurred.

2. If possible, take photographs of the area where you were hurt.

A picture is worth a thousand words. This is especially true in premises liability cases. And remember, most cell phones have cameras on them. Use your phone to take pictures.

3. Write down the names of any witnesses, including names of employees if you were hurt at a place of business.

It is important to know who saw your accident so your lawyer can take witness statements and find out what they will say.

4. If you are hurt at a business, do not sign anything at the time of the incident or until you know your rights.

Some businesses will shove paperwork in your face immediately after you are hurt and ask that you sign on the dotted line. Under no circumstances should you sign anything until you have at least sought medical attention and you know what you are signing.

5. If you were hurt at a business, do not sign a copy of any incident report given to you by an employee until you know what you are signing.

A business will sometimes draft an incident report that does not accurately reflect what happened. They will try to make the report sound more favorable to them. Do not sign such a report unless it reflects what actually happened and you know what you are signing.
