5 Important Things to Keep in Mind with Social Media and Your Personal Injury Case

In the age of social media, it is very difficult to maintain privacy in the online world. In personal injury cases, insurance companies and lawyers will try and dig up information from your online profile to use against you. Keep these five things in mind to help avoid that possibility.

1. If you can, completely remove any social media profiles while your case is going. Avoid any of the problems with an insurance company or lawyer spying on your online profile by taking it down. When your case is over, you can put it back up.

2. At least take down any social media profiles that don't have privacy settings. MySpace, Linkedin, and similar sites are publicly accessible; take them down as soon as you make a claim.

3. If you can't or don't want to take down your online profiles, set your privacy settings to friends only, if that's an option. Facebook allows you to choose only people who are your friends to view your information. Make sure your settings are adjusted accordingly.

4. Remove any inappropriate content before you make a personal injury claim. Err on the side of caution with this one. Do this even if your privacy settings are on friends only.

5. Friend only people you know. Be selective in who you friend, especially after you initiate your personal injury claim.
